Do the credits cover the annual fee?

Premium cards justify big fees with statement credits. Here’s what every card with a fee of $250 or more pays back in credits a year, and how much work it takes to collect.

Updated Oct 15, 2026

An $895 fee is easier to swallow next to “over $3,000 in credits”. But credits only count if you use them, and many come in small monthly pieces that expire. This table puts every open card with an annual fee of $250 or more side by side. On paper, 19 of these 32 cards pay back more in credits than they charge.

How to read it

  • Credits a year adds up the card’s cash statement credits. It leaves out credits you unlock by spending (like a free night after $30,000 of purchases), points, free night certificates and lounge access. Credits that come every few years, like Global Entry, are spread across those years.
  • Monthly credits is how many credits you have to remember every single month. Each month you skip is gone for good.
  • Need activation counts credits that do nothing until you enroll, add the card to an app or switch them on.

The catch: count only what you’d spend anyway

A $10 monthly dining credit is worth $120 a year only if you’d order from that restaurant anyway. If you’d never use it, it’s worth nothing, however big the number looks. A simple way to judge a card: count a credit at full value if you’d pay for that thing without it, at half if you’d use it now and then, and at zero if you’d have to go out of your way. If what’s left doesn’t cover the fee, the card has to earn its keep through points, lounges or other perks.

Collect every dollar you count on

Premium IC (free) lists each of these credits with a checkbox, reminds you before they expire and adds up what you’ve actually gotten back next to the fee, so renewal time is an easy call.
