The short version
- Amex Fine Hotels + Resorts (Platinum cards): breakfast for two, a $100 property credit and guaranteed 4pm checkout at luxury hotels. The Platinum cards also pay up to $600 a year toward prepaid bookings.
- Amex The Hotel Collection (Platinum and Gold cards): a $100 property credit on stays of 2 nights or more.
- Chase’s The Edit (Sapphire Reserve): breakfast for two and a $100 property credit, plus up to $500 a year in credits on prepaid stays of 2 nights or more.
- Capital One’s Premier and Lifestyle Collections (Venture X, Venture): breakfast and up to $100 at Premier hotels, up to $50 at Lifestyle hotels. The Venture X’s $300 travel credit works on any Capital One Travel booking.
- Citi’s The Reserve (Strata Elite, Strata Premier): breakfast for two and a $100 experience credit, plus a yearly hotel credit on each card. Other Citi cards get breakfast and Wi-Fi at the 4-star hotels in Citi’s Hotel Collection.
- Bilt Travel (Palladium, Obsidian): hotel credits twice a year on stays of 2 nights or more.
The catch is the same everywhere: you book through the bank’s own travel site, the rules decide which bookings count, and a credit only saves you money on a stay you’d have paid for anyway.
Amex: Fine Hotels + Resorts and The Hotel Collection
- Fine Hotels + Resorts (Platinum, Business Platinum, and the Schwab and Morgan Stanley Platinum cards): daily breakfast for two, a $100 credit for things like dining or the spa, guaranteed 4pm checkout and Wi-Fi on every stay, plus a room upgrade and noon check-in when available.
- The Hotel Collection (the same Platinum cards, plus the Gold and Business Gold): a $100 property credit on stays of 2 nights or more, plus a room upgrade, noon check-in and 4pm checkout when available. No breakfast.
- Booking: through Amex Travel, paid with the card. The perks work whether or not you prepay; the card credit needs a prepaid booking.
- The credit: the Platinum cards give up to $300 from January to June and $300 from July to December (Amex now calls it the $600 Lodging Credit) on prepaid Fine Hotels + Resorts, Hotel Collection or Airbnb Luxe bookings through Amex Travel. The Hotel Collection and Airbnb Luxe need 2 nights, and from January 1, 2027, Fine Hotels + Resorts bookings need 2 nights to count for the credit too. A half-year’s credit you don’t use is gone. See the Platinum and Business Platinum.
- Hotel points: Amex says prepaid stays still earn the hotel’s own loyalty points under the hotel program’s rules. Give your loyalty number at check-in.
Chase: The Edit and the Chase Travel hotel credits
- The Edit (Sapphire Reserve, and the primary cardholder on Sapphire Reserve Business): daily breakfast for two, a $100 property credit, a welcome amenity and Wi-Fi, plus a room upgrade and early check-in or late checkout when available. All-inclusive stays get a $200 credit instead of breakfast, and boutique hotels skip the upgrade and flexible times.
- Booking: through Chase Travel. “Pay Later” bookings still get the perks, but only prepaid “Pay Now” bookings get the card credit.
- The credits: the Sapphire Reserve gives two $250 credits a calendar year, usable any time in the year, on prepaid The Edit stays of 2 nights or more. Bookings paid entirely with points don’t count, and the part of the stay the credit covers earns no points. Through December 31, 2026 it also has up to $250 on prepaid 2-night Chase Travel stays at select brands (IHG, Montage, Pendry, Omni, Virgin Hotels, Minor Hotels and Pan Pacific).
- Hotel points: only at hotels in Chase’s Loyalty Plus program, flagged in Chase Travel’s search results. There, the stay earns the hotel’s points and elite nights, and your status perks apply.
- Sapphire Preferred: no hotel program, but up to $100 a card year off prepaid hotels booked through Chase Travel. See the Sapphire Preferred.
Capital One: Premier and Lifestyle Collections
- Premier Collection (Venture X and Venture X Business): up to a $100 experience credit, daily breakfast for two and Wi-Fi, plus a room upgrade, early check-in and late checkout when available. Premier vacation rentals get a $100 experience credit too.
- Lifestyle Collection (Venture X, Venture X Business, Venture and Venture Business): up to a $50 experience credit and Wi-Fi, plus a room upgrade, early check-in and late checkout when available. No breakfast.
- Fourth night free at some Premier and Lifestyle hotels on stays of 4 nights or more, when the offer shows at booking.
- Booking: through Capital One Travel (Capital One Business Travel on the business cards), in the cardholder’s name.
- The credits: the Venture X’s $300 travel credit works on any Capital One Travel booking, hotels included, and the Venture has up to $100 a card year for hotels and vacation rentals. Both come off at checkout, so they don’t work on bookings you pay at the hotel.
- Hotel points: Capital One doesn’t say whether these stays earn hotel points. Ask the hotel before you book if that matters to you.
Citi: The Reserve and the Hotel Collection
- The Reserve (Strata Elite, Strata Premier and Prestige): daily breakfast for two, a $100 experience credit once per stay, Wi-Fi, and early check-in, late checkout or an upgrade when available. Pick the room rate marked The Reserve on Citi Travel.
- Hotel Collection (Citi cards that can book on Citi Travel, including the Double Cash and Custom Cash): daily breakfast for two, Wi-Fi, and early check-in and late checkout when available, at 4-star hotels and resorts. No credit or upgrade.
- The credits: the Strata Elite takes up to $300 a calendar year off stays of 2 nights or more (before taxes and fees), and the Strata Premier $100 off one stay of $500 or more each calendar year. Both come off at booking on Citi Travel, and the whole stay must be prepaid with the card, ThankYou points or both.
- Hotel points: Citi doesn’t say. Ask the hotel if it matters to you.
Bilt: hotel credits on Bilt Travel
- The credits: the Bilt Palladium gives up to $200 from January to June and $200 from July to December, and the Bilt Obsidian $50 in each half, on Bilt Travel hotel bookings of 2 nights or more, for the primary cardholder. Turn the credit on when you book.
- Prepaid or not: on prepaid bookings it comes off at checkout; pay-at-hotel bookings count too, with the credit posting after the stay.
- Watch for: a half-year’s credit you don’t use is gone, and Bilt can take it back if you cancel or change the booking. There’s no package of hotel perks; the credit is the benefit.
The fine print that trips people up
- Prepaid rates. Most card credits only count prepaid bookings, which can be harder to cancel. Read the cancellation rule before you book.
- Compare the price. The bank’s rate can be higher than booking the hotel directly. A $100 credit on a stay that costs $150 more saves you nothing.
- Hotel points and status. Amex says its prepaid stays still earn hotel points, and Chase only at Loyalty Plus hotels. Capital One, Citi and Bilt don’t say, so ask the hotel.
- Minimum nights. Many credits need 2 nights or more, and from 2027 that includes Amex’s Fine Hotels + Resorts credit.
- When the credit resets. Amex and Bilt split theirs into January to June and July to December; Chase’s The Edit and Citi’s credits run on the calendar year; Capital One’s and the Sapphire Preferred’s on your card year, from your approval date.
Which one fits you
- Luxury hotels a few times a year: Fine Hotels + Resorts or The Edit, where breakfast and the property credit add up fast.
- Mid-range stays: The Hotel Collection, the Lifestyle Collection, Citi’s Hotel Collection or Bilt’s credits.
- You’d rather not think about it: the Venture X’s $300 credit works on any Capital One Travel booking, hotel or not.
Every hotel credit, card by card: cards with hotel credits. Track the ones on your cards in Premium Finance (free), which reminds you before each one runs out.
Programs and credits change often. Each card’s page shows when we last checked it against the bank’s site.
