CLEAR+ credit not showing up on your card

Paid for CLEAR+ and the $219 credit never came? Most misses come down to the card CLEAR has on file, how you paid, or the yearly cap.

By Quy Dinh · Checked Oct 25, 2026

How it works

The Platinum (including the Schwab and Morgan Stanley versions), Business Platinum, Green and Hilton Honors Aspire pay back up to $219 of CLEAR+ per calendar year. The Centurion has a CLEAR+ credit too.

There's no Amex enrollment. You join CLEAR+, or switch an existing membership's payment card, and pay with the card.

The cap is per card account per calendar year and shared by every card on the account. It resets January 1.

CLEAR+ renews automatically each year and charges the card on file, so the credit comes again each year that renewal is paid with an eligible card.

What it looks like when it works

  • A CLEAR charge for the membership, then a statement credit for up to $219.
  • Cardholders report recent credits read 'AMEX CLEAR PLUS CREDIT'. Older Aspire statements showed the credit under CLEAR's own name instead.
  • A single CLEAR+ membership costs $219 a year, so one person's membership is fully covered.

How long it takes

Usually within a few days of the CLEAR charge. Amex says it can take up to 6-8 weeks.

Why it didn’t post

1. CLEAR charged a different card

Log in to your CLEAR account and make the Amex card your payment method before the renewal. If your card was replaced, update the number with CLEAR.

2. You paid through an app store or a digital wallet

Amex says it may not recognize a purchase made through an app store, another third party or an electronic wallet. Pay CLEAR directly with the card.

3. This year's $219 is already used

The cap covers every card on the account for the calendar year. Added family members cost $125 each, and the credit still tops out at $219 a year, so extra members are mostly out of pocket.

4. The charge counted toward a different year

Amex goes by the date CLEAR processes the charge. A December 31 charge that processes on January 1 uses next year's credit.

5. Your card doesn't have the CLEAR+ credit

It's a benefit of specific cards, not every Amex. Check that your card lists the CLEAR+ credit in its benefits.

6. CLEAR refunded the charge

If CLEAR doesn't approve you or refunds the membership, Amex takes the credit back.

7. The account was past due or you switched cards

The credit may not post if the account is past due or closed when it's due, or if you moved to a different card before CLEAR sent the charge.

What doesn’t count

  • Membership costs above $219 a year per account, such as several added family members
  • Taxes and fees on the membership (the Platinum's terms exclude them)
  • CLEAR+ bought through an app store
  • TSA PreCheck enrollment bought from CLEAR on its own (that's a separate fee, not a CLEAR+ membership)

Still missing? Do this

  1. In your CLEAR account, check which card paid and on what date.
  2. Find that CLEAR charge on your Amex statement.
  3. Check whether this calendar year's credit was already used, on this card or another card on the account.
  4. Wait at least a week; Amex allows up to 8 weeks.
  5. Then call the number on the back of your card or use chat and ask about the CLEAR+ credit for that charge.

Questions people ask

Does it cover family members?

Only up to the $219 yearly cap for the whole account. Each added adult costs $125, so once your own membership is paid, extra members are mostly on you.

Do I have to do anything each year?

No. CLEAR+ renews itself and charges the card on file. Just keep the right card on file with CLEAR.

Is CLEAR the same as TSA PreCheck or Global Entry?

No. CLEAR checks your ID; PreCheck and Global Entry are government programs. Global Entry and PreCheck credits don't pay for CLEAR+, and the CLEAR+ credit doesn't pay for them.

What if CLEAR doesn't approve me?

CLEAR refunds the charge and Amex reverses the credit.
